A missing 24-year-old woman was arrested after she and her 4-month-old son were found at a Dayton apartment Tuesday afternoon.

Dayton police were looking for Tiara Bines and her infant after her family requested a wellness check Monday night. It wasn’t clear what prompted the wellness check.

Maj. Brian Johns said Bines has a history of mental health issues and police were concerned for her and her son’s safety.

Around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday police asked for the public’s help finding the mother and son. They received a tip that she was at an apartment at Triangle View Apartments.

The apartment belongs to a friend who let police inside, Johns said.

The boy was found on the ground floor and Bines was upstairs.

“She wasn’t very cooperative,” Johns said.

Medics were with the baby at the apartment. He appeared to be healthy and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Bines was transported and booked into the Montgomery County Jail. She could face child endangering and inducing panic charges, Johns said.

Police confirmed Wednesday Bines threatened to harm herself and her son. There was reportedly evidence of physical abuse as well.

Police were with Dayton Fire Department water rescue crews and Five Rivers MetroParks Tuesday morning on Deweese Parkway near Boonshoft Museum of Discovery searching for Bines and her son.

Johns said they had a lead they were in the area. There was a pond with a small hole in the ice, so police used drones to see if there was anything in the water.

“We were very concerned about the baby,” Johns said Tuesday afternoon. “I’m just very glad that the baby is safe and not harmed as we first thought.”

He could not elaborate on why crews thought the infant could be harmed.

Johns thanked everyone who called in tips to the police department.

“Tips from the public are always a big help for us, in this case and all cases,” he said. “It really helped us.”
